After nearly a week of winter weather, we are finally back to school in NC. For those of you who do not know, snowfall is quite an event here. We hear all kinds of criticism from northerners who are quite used to this weather. They simply do not understand how a little snow can basically shut down a town (or a state). Well, to be honest, people here do not know how to drive in the white stuff. Especially newly trained bus drivers with 60+students in their charge. Or a 16 year old who just got her license. So we stay home. Sometimes we err on the side of caution, but better safe than sorry is our motto. There are other factors to consider (ICE), but that is not the purpose of today’s blog so I will move on.
So, students, how did you spend your time? Netflix marathon? Sleep? Binge on Super Mario or Assassin’s Creed? Or were you productive and got some good ‘ol studying done. Did you remember your impending finals? Did you finally finish that end of semester project?
Snow days can be a time for relaxing and reconnecting with yourself. High School is stressful, particularly for seniors, so recharging your batteries may be the best thing you can do for yourself. But don’t forget the work that needs to be done. Make sure you are taking advantage of the extra time nature has provided by being a little productive. Read that novel that has been on your to-do list. Do some research, write the paper. Get it done while you are relaxed and your teacher is not hounding you (well, maybe a little, there is still Google Classroom).
Don’t have any pending work? Look for scholarships and apply. Take an interest inventory to help you figure out where you will be best suited in your future career. Explore colleges (virtually). Schedule visits in the spring. Start making some concrete post-secondary plans.
And, here it is, sit down with your parental figure and catch up. They miss you. You don’t have to tell them everything but they want to know what’s going on in your life. You are becoming real people right in front of their eyes and they want to know you. If that’s not possible for whatever reason, try to connect with someone else in your life who has taken a back seat to all you have going on. It will mean the world to them.
